Holiday Countdown #1

Well Merry Christmas world. I sit here watching A Christmas Story for the 10th time today and look to pen the final entry into this running theme for the holiday season. We have come to the top spot. For those that know me, this will come as no surprise. To me this is holiday perfection…

The key to this entire endeavor is to make sure you see the video with the banter between Bowie and Bing. “Oh, it’s been a long time since I’ve been the new anything.” “Well right or wrong, I sing either way” Bing, is such a liar when he says he thinks some of the modern music is “just fine.” You know he is thinking, “who in the fuck is this chipper Brit giving me shit about being the ‘poor relation from America’ which one of my agents signed up for this!” The best bit is how Bing pronounces Bowie. It is seriously “Booh-ie”. That shit gets me every single time. Too funny. Also, the ‘agents sliding down the chimney’ line is something to behold. It is so forced and amazing. Also Bing’s forced laugh…’ah, ha’ so damn good.

Fun fact that Bowie forced the producers to change the song and write the ‘peace on Earth’ part because Little Drummer Boy didn’t showcase his vocal range enough. He was only doing the show because his gran loved Bing Crosby…Bowie couldn’t be bothered…I’m sure there was a mountain of cocaine and heroin waiting for him backstage on a naked model. I assume that is how Bowie rolled in the 70’s.

For an added bit of fun Will Ferrel and John C. Riley did an homage to this a few years back…showing us what also likely happened after the song. Well for fucks sake, I guess I can’t embed the video here. You can look it up on youtube, it is worth your 5 minutes.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy Festivus to all!

There was some latin shit here once, but nobody uses that language now except the Pope…and I am no Pope. What I am is a student. Not a student in the literal sense, but someone who believes that you have to always be challenging yourself to learn. Not necessarily things we have learned from textbooks. My learning is more about putting myself in difficult situations to understand more about me and the world around me. It is the challenge that allows you to grow as a person. That is my philosophy. Some of the things that I will eventually get around to posting may focus on that, reflections on a life that has seen me through the rust belt to the new (and not so new) south and through a life abroad. However many of these posts will focus on the lighter things that interest me. My obsession with 80’s/90’s pop culture, my obsession with sports especially of the Cleveland and Ohio State variety, and maybe even my obsession with musical theater…who knows. Maybe somebody will read this, maybe they won’t…but that isn’t the point. The point is that if I find something interesting I will try to dissect it here, maybe not timely (I do have a day job) but eventually.
